Attention! This table lists the campaigns of Prince Igor Rurikovich, as well as campaigns carried out by his order. In addition to the events listed below, during the reign of Prince Igor Rurikovich, there were two so-called “Caspian campaigns of the Rus” in 913/914 and 943/944. The descriptions of these campaigns are not found in the chronicles and do not contain explicit indications of direct or indirect involvement of the prince.
Name/Date | Causes | Outcomes |
914 | After the death of Oleg the Prophet, the Drevlyans stopped paying tribute. | Rurikovich conducted a campaign against the Drevlyans, forcing them to resume paying tribute. |
920 | Unknown | Unknown |
937-940 | The Ulichs did not submit to Oleg the Prophet, so Igor decided to include this Slavic tribe living near Kiev in his sphere of influence. At his order, the voivode Sveneld began a war against the Ulich. | Most of the Ulich’s lands were conquered quickly, but the main city was barely taken, besieged for three years. Tribute on the Ulich was imposed similarly to the Drevlyans. |
941 | Learning of Byzantium’s refusal to pay tribute, Igor decided to break the truce and launched a campaign against Constantinople. | Complete defeat on land, the Rus fleet was smashed at sea by the Byzantines with the use of “Greek fire.” |
943 | For the second campaign, Igor hired Varangians and Pechenegs, built a huge fleet, and needed to restore his authority after the previous defeat. | The Byzantine Emperor sent envoys with gifts and offered peace to the Russian army upon their arrival. |
